Girl Staycation Weekend! Day 1

Hi Dolls,

It’s been a while (sorry new blogger). I’ve been really busy working full time trying to build an art career, being a wifey, watching Netflix, breathing and trying to take over the world. It can be pretty stressful, so I’ve been needing some time with my girls. A nice trip, like the one in the movie Girls Trip, but just on one small little detail. See the way my bank account works, well ain’t nobody got money or time for that. Queue Nanthale, my friend who decided we should have a girls trip, a NYC staycation – a vacation where you stay your ass at home. Because honestly there’s no where better than NYC. Excited? Wanna hear about how it went? No? Well I’ll tell you anyway, here we go Staycation part 1.

Disclaimer: This a sponsored post; clothes and tour tickets were gifted for feature, but all opinions are my own.

How does one enjoy a staycation? Great question, doll. Food, Fashion, Friends and Fun (in that order). First let’s talk about the first event of the day a fun and educational: The Badass Bitches Tour by Museum Hack.  Before we get into that let me introduce my girls: Marlena (bigcitycurvygirlthinwallet), Brooke (Madame Finehouse), Marcy (Fearlessly Just Me), Nantale ( N.E.C. Style) and Fabiola (Fabiola Michelle). My girls joined me during the Badass Bitches Tour (hereon known as BABS) to bring down the patriarchy.

Serious learning going on here. Look at how concerned I am.

Our tour guide Sara…..yes, you’re reading that right.

The BABS tour takes a “normal” museum tour at the MET and turns it on it’s head. The theme is Feminism and the lack of female artist in the museum. Spoiler alert- there ain’t that many. On this tour you be taken on a scavenger hunt to find….well I won’t give it away, but be burning down glass ceilings. 5 stars, the best time you’ll have looking at paintings of dead folks by other dead folks, I guarantee.

Fullbeauty Style

So what does one wear to a Badass Bitch Tour? Easy you wear looks by Woman Within’s Chelsea Studio via The theme was comfy, casual and cute (Why the side eye Marlena? This is my casual). I choose a lovely navy blue sleeveless maxi and paired it with a patterned headwrap  with a  simple kimono (sold out but similar) for a perfect boho look. The best thing about the look is it can be dressed up or down depending on how you style.

A couple of Badass Bitches

After leaving the Met, we decided to end the day with what inspired it all the weekend – the “Girl’s Trip” movie.  Off to IPC Theaters we went for the “Ultimate Night Out” at iPic theaters. iPic is a unique dine-in movie experience located in Fulton Market. There you can order from a full dining menu and bar with amazing drinks, this is a grown folks only type vibe. It was the perfect way to end the day. Stay turned for part 2 coming soon!

Hello Kitty In The City, featuring Torrid!

Jonquel Art in Hello Kitty x Torrid

Hi Dolls,

If you know anything about me or if you’ve never heard of me before (do you live under a rock?), here is one fact you should know …..okay make that two facts, but whose counting. I’m a huge geek and I love all things cute! I mean it, I’m a true anime, comic book fangirl (more on that in a later post), so imagine how I felt when I found out Torrid, the brand of all things awesome (pretty sure that’s their tagline?) teamed up with the cult of cute herself Hello Kitty. The Torrid x Hello Kitty collection has everything you need to express your fun playful side in a fashion forward on trend way. I’m featuring three items from the collection: The Hello Kitty button-back top, bow sleeve top and, my fav, the border print swing skirt. I styled these pieces in three distinct ways: Sweet, Sassy and Street!

Up first, the Sweet! I paired this adorable Border Print mint green swing skirt is to die for. The bow embellishment on the tummy is not only cute, but is perfect for smoothing in that area. Hello Kitty herself graces the border of the skirt in her very own city scene (get it girl). This piece is perfect to bring out the flirty side of you and is a true attention grabber. Its light weight, the perfect length even on a shorty like me and did I mention the best part? It Has Pockets!!!!

The City Graphics

Next let’s take to the Streets!  The Hello Kitty Bow Sleeve Tee is street-chic meets unicorns on a New York subway. The soft charcoal gray knit features a scoop neck and Hello Kitty Graphic on the front. I paired with my favorite pair of Ashley Stewart distressed jeans (sold out but similar here), which are on trend…okay I really paired with these because they look like a cat shredded them. To finish the theme I brought out one of my favorite novelty bags, The Milk.

And finally, the Sassy Hey Kitty Kat! This may be my favorite look. I’m wearing the Button Back Top from earlier, but I styled completely different, proof you can get more than one vibe out of a great piece if you style it right. I’ve paired it with distressed black leggings, again from Ashley Stewart, they too look like a cat took to them (similar here) and sexy little puff ball heels.  The mint green top features a Peter Pan printed bow collar and kitty head buttons on the back. This is a head turner look people. Head. Turner. And to answer the question I’m sure you’ve been dying to ask….yes, those are kitty ears on my head. Until next time dolls!

The Making of the “It’s in the Stars” Series.

Hey Dolls!

I want to bring you into my head for a moment and breakdown what inspired my latest collection: “It’s in the Stars”: A Plus Size Zodiac.

It’s in the Stars

Creating this series was not easy, it really stretched me in many ways. I spent hours pouring over astrological research, trying to understand what the different traits of each sign was and why were they SO important to people. That was only phase one, I then had to create 12 mood boards where I collected inspiration for each sign. I researched straight size fashion runway, plus size designers, makeup, hair, you need name it. I wanted to share a little of my brainstorming process and how I created a few chosen signs: Aquarius, Scorpio, Virgo and the very special exchange that inspired Sagittarius.

Aquarius mood board

Aquarius. Little know fact about me, I shop for my “girls”. I will spend hours in online shops looking for inspiration and this series was no exception. I knew that I wanted to high a least one indie plus size designer in my series and Courtney Noelle delivers every time. When I saw the Siren jumpsuit I knew this would be the look Aquarius would rock. I knew I could base the entire look around this look. Her pose and body type were inspired by popular influencer Shaina Harrison (of Corner Rich). Total Black Girl Magic.

Scorpio mode board

Scorpio. This one was alot of fun and one of my favorite looks. Mainly because of her hair, it was all about the hair! I searched all of Pinterest for hair inspiration, I knew I wanted her to rock a shaved head like Cassie, with an 90’s black school boy hair design. I also wanted her hair to take the shape of the scorpion. However, let’s to about the big thing, her out fit. The top was pulled from Christian Siriano’s 2017 NYFW runway show. Can we talk about how much I love him, for just sliding plus size models in his show? Like it was the most normal thing in the world (which it should be!) and the ladies SLAYED!! Chrisitian’s looks appear again on Leo.

Virgo mode board

Virgo. I think it’s clear who inspired Virgo’s look…Ashley Neil Tipton! I’ve been a huge fan of Project Runway since it debuted, but no one has touched my heart like Ashley. Seeing her final collection on the show will forever be one of my favorite Body Positive moments and she’s still killing it now with her collaboration with Boutique + . When I think of Virgo I think of softness, pastels and flowers befitting the virgin, but most Virgos I know aren’t soft. In fact they are some of the toughest people I know, which is why I knew I wanted to do lace and leather. Ashley’s bomber jacket (now on sale) provided the perfect blend of those to worlds. The rest of the outfit was inspired by the lacy and sheer skirts in Ashley’s collection. I changed her top several times, finally deciding to leave her shirtless. I’ve seen straight size models styled this why, so I thought why not (they’re only breasts).

The design for Sagittarius, has the most interesting story behind it. In fact the story embodies one of the reasons I decided to do Plus fashion illustration vs. straight. Last year I was commissioned to do a portrait of a woman for a birthday gift to herself. She give me total artistic control, but she had one request. That I style her in Rihanna’s Manolo Blahnik boots. Her reason? She loved the boots and she could afford them, but……….they would not fit her thighs. She was a lover of fashion and was willing to spent the money on the hottest looks, but they were not made with a plus size body in mind ( I still love you Riri). So she had me create that vision for her, she could at least enjoy those boots in art. After that I knew I wanted to use the boots again (they are beautiful) so when I was thinking of looks for Sag, I thought they were perfect. The cowboy like style worked with the sign’s symbol “the centaur”. I paired with a bodysuit (very on trend) to show off those gap free thighs (thick thighs save lives)! Styled with a Beyonce braid, golden arrow head pins and a face beat for the gawds, Sag was given lyfe. I hope to see more brands embrace plus bodies when they are designing their collections, but until then I’ll continue to give you fat girl fashion!
